This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The surface plasmon coupled emission SPCE is the fluorescence phenomena that occurs only from a thin region next to the metal film, providing efficient distribution of surface localized fluorophores and suppression of emission from more distant background emitting. We recently showed that SPCE occurs with gold films as well as silver films. The goal of this project is to develope SPCE as a new technology for practical bioassays, test different metals and different device configurations.
