This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The BUSM MS Resource sponsors a weekly seminar series open to all interested persons in the Medical School community as well as investigators from other academic, research and industrial institutions throughout the Boston area. These provide an opportunity for staff members to present summaries of their ongoing research and for visiting scientists to meet and discuss their research with local scientists. Publicity for these seminars takes the form of posted notices, as well as standard mail, e-mail and telephone announcements to those outside BUSM. During this year, outside speakers have included Jens Henriksen (Peter Roepstorff group, Univ. of So. Denmark), Dr. Cheng Zhao (Troy Woods group, SUNY Buffalo), Dr. Donna Potts (Simon Gaskell group, UMIST, Manchester, UK), Prof. Ira S. Krull (Northeastern Univ.), Dr. Oscar F. van den Brink (Akzo-Nobel Chemicals, Utrecht, The Netherlands), Dr. Melinda McFarland (Alan Marshall group, Florida State Univ.), Dr. Julian Saba (Helene Perreault group, Univ. of Manitoba), Prof. Renato Zanobi (ETH, Zurich). Prof. O'Connor chaired the departmental seminar series and he included in the 2004-2005 series of the Biochemistry Department seminars by Prof. Igor Kaltashov (Univ. of Massachusetts, Amherst), Prof. Ronald Schnaar (Johns Hopklins Univ. School of Medicine), Prof. Joseph A. Loo (UCLA), Dr. Barbara S. Larsen (Dupont Company, Wilmington, DE). In her role as Director of the NHLBI-funded BUSM Cardiovascular Proteomics Center, Prof. Costello was the co-organizer of a symposium on Oxidative Post-translational Modifications in the Cardiovascular System that was held at BUSM, October 6-8, 2004. This meeting attracted about 125 investigators and students from around and outside the US. Participants had the opportunity to visit the MS Resource and to receive advice from staff members. In addition to BUSM staff and students, many active mass spectrometrists were among the invited speakers and attendees, including Prof. Gerald W. Hart (Johns Hopkins Univ. School of Medicine), Dr. Leesa Deterding (NIEHS, Research Triangle, NC), Prof. Jennifer van Eyck (Johns Hopkins Univ. School of Medicine), Prof. Stephen Barnes (Univ. Alabama, Birmingham). Prof. Costello also arranged for one of the invited speakers, Prof. Maria J. Saraiva (Univ. Porto, Portugal), one of the foremost experts on Familial Amyliodic Polyneurapathy, to present a Topic Conference for the BUSM Amyloid Program
