The aim of this project is to develop a general algorithm for numerical modeling of diffusion in the cellular membranes. Because geometries in the Virtual Cell are inferred from segmented images, the membrane is approximated by a staircase surface. The key problem therefore is to find an appropriate smoothing algorithm, which allows an accurate approximation of normals and curvatures.
