This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. According to the guidelines established by HIPAA, all personally identifiable information must be removed from patients' medical records before those records can be shared with other medical researchers. We are developing algorithms that will de-identify free-text nursing notes as well as clincians doing the same task. A database of nursing notes manually de-identifed by hired clinicians is being created that will be made publicly available for the testing and evaluation of de-identification algorithms. We are also gathering statistics about the performance of human de-identifiers. We will use those statistics to test whether our de-identification algorithms perform at least as well as human
