The objectives of this core facility are (1) To maintain a comprehensive bank of frozen and fixed breast carcinoma and normal breast tissues from patients with follow-up information for use by SPORE investigators and other relevant groups including other SPORES. (2) To provide comprehensive tissue procurement, histologic, and tissue processing services, and (3) to provide expert assistance in Conducting experiments using specimens from human and animal subjects, including assistance in interpreting immunohistochemical and In-situ hybridization studies. The Tumor Bank began operations in 1991 under the Direction of Dr. Soonmyoung Paik, a board certified pathologist (anatomic pathology) with a number of publications in the area of breast carcinoma. Since October of 1993, Dr. Elizabeth Montgomery, a service-oriented pathologist (board certified in anatomic, clinical, and cytopathology), assumed the responsibility for the daily operations of the Tumor Bank. Based on Dr. Paik's experience in breast carcinoma pathology, which includes successful collaborations with the NSABP and the Yonsei Cancer Center, he remains the Tumor Bank Co-Director and continues to function as an active consultant to all SPORE investigators in both the current and proposed SPORE. The Tumor Bank works closely with the other Core Facilities and provides a full range of tissue processing and procurement services.
