Core A, the Administrative Core of this National Institute of Neurological Disorders andStroke (NINDS) Morris K. Udall Parkinson's Disease Research Center of Excellence (Udall Center)at the University of Pennsylvania (PENN), will facilitate accomplishing the goals of thismultidisciplinary research program. Briefly, the goals of this Udall Center are to elucidatemechanisms of neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease (PD), especially those mechanismsunderlying the cognitive and executive impairments in PD patients with dementia (PDD) anddementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), which we hypothesize are the result of neuron dysfunction anddeath due to accumulations of oligomeric/fibrillar species of alpha-synuclein, and in somePD/PDD/DLB patients, also of tau and A0. Thus, the Aims of Core A are to oversee budgetary andfiscal aspects of this Udall Center; promote and foster interactions between Core and Projectinvestigators, as well as interactions of Udall Center investigators with scientists at and beyondPENN; monitor the progress of the Cores and Projects; facilitate the sharing of data, reagents, andresources generated by PENN Udall Center investigators with other researchers in accordance withNIH policies; and participate in annual Udall Center meetings to accelerate the pace of advances inunderstanding PD with and without dementia. By utilizing the strategies in these Aims, Core A willplay an important administrative role in this Udall Center by fostering the accomplishment of itsresearch goals..
