This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This project will investigate the biological responses to small diameter vascular grafts using a variety of well characterized animal models, including: (i) a baboon femoral arteriovenous shunt model, and (ii) a primate model for graft implant studies. In collaboration with Dr. Chaikof's group at Emory University, Dr. Hanson will be involved in the production and evaluation of endothelialized conduits using autogenous baboon endothelial cells. The proposed experiments will require the use of baboons for ex vivo shunt studies and in vivo implant studies during project years 2 through 5. It is anticipated that 10 shunt studies will be performed per year, totaling 30 studies during project years 2-4. In addition, 40 in vivo implant studies, of either 30 day or 6 month duration, will be conducted during years 2-5. Data will be provided regarding the shunt experiments, surgical procedures, and all morphometric and immunohistochemical analyses.
