This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Objective: There is an urgent need to develop vaccines that can elicit immunological memory responses against HIV. Because the immune system of rhesus macaques is similar to that of humans, this nonhuman primate offers important opportunities for preclinical studies of anti-HIV vaccines. Our objective is to induce anti-HIV memory-type immune responses in both the mucosal and systemic compartments. Optimal mucosal immune responses induced by vaccination could prevent or suppress HIV infection through the most common route of transmission, i.e., heterosexual transmission.
