The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.The objective of this study is to examine the effects of different nursery rearing strategies on the emergence of self-directed behaviors so as to design nursery rearing methods that will reduce the development of abnormal behaviors such as self-biting and enhance primate health and well-being.
Our specific aims are to examine the importance of variation in socialization and independent time in rhesus macaque social and behavioral development. Our hypothesis is that both variation in social partners and independent time are important factors for normative behavioral and social development in rhesus macaques.
