The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) will hold a research workshop entitled """"""""Role of Cytokines in Inflammation"""""""" on Nov. 2, 1990 in Chicago, IL., immediately prior to the Annual Meeting of the AASLD. The workshop has been organized by the Research Committee of the AASLD for the education of young investigators (postdoctoral trainees antijunior faculty who are interested in the pathophysiology and mechanisms of liver disease. The workshop will address very recent conceptual and technical developments in the field of cytokines. The overall goal of this workshop is to provide up-to-date information on recent developments on the identification of various cytokines, the regulation of their gene expression, their actions and mechanisms and the role of naturally occurring antagonists. Experts in the areas to be discussed will provide an overview and particularly stress their own recent work. The first four talks will deal with the molecular aspects of interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor-necrosis factor, interleukin-6, and interleukin-8, as well as their regulation (including antagonists) and actions. The final three will cover applications to specific experimental models such as ischemia, colitis and endotoxin. It is hoped that this will stimulate efforts by young investigators interested in liver disease to work in this important and rapidly developing field. The topics to be covered include: 1.Molecular Characterization of IL-1 and Receptor Antagonist. 2. Molecular Aspects of Tumor Necrosis factor and Receptors. 3. Role of Interleukin-6 in Hepatic Acute Phase Response. 4. Interleukin-8 and Leukocyte Endothelial Adhesion. 5. Cytokines in Ischemia-Reperfusion and Transplantation. 6. Cytokines in an Inflammatory Colitis Model. 7. Endotoxin, Macrophages and Cytokines. Funding is requested to cover costs for planning and conducting the workshop and for travel and per diem expenses and honoraria for speakers.
