The Computing Core (CC) provides a highly responsive computing environment for CCPR research and cores. The Core has six specific goals: (1) to provide the best available computing power to meet the needs of affiliates; (2) to allocate resources efficiently and minimize downtime; (3) to provide the most effective available software and hardware resources; (4) to support afflliates in navigating computing resources; (5) to assist other Cores in providing the highest quality, cost-effective services; and (6) to monitor, anticipate and plan for future computing needs and to develop solutions to those needs. The Core accomplishes these goals by bringing systems on line which work in parallel to provide stateof- the-art computing services. The Core also runs a secured network environment that is fully accessible regardless of a user's location or local area network (LAN). This network environment greatly facilitates research collaboration because affiliates are located in many units across campus (e.g., Public Health, the Social Sciences) which often have their own computing structures and LANs. The CCPR network seamlessly facilitates collaborative research and working group activities for affiliates. The Core assists affiliates in identifying appropriate equipment, troubleshooting, installing and upgrading programs and systems, and maintaining computing. Finally, the Core continuously develops and updates specialized applications for the Center as a whole and individual research projects.
