Electron spin resonance spectrometry is a widely used technique for the detection of free radicals and paramagnetic centers. There are over 23,000 published biomedical research papers citing this technique, particularly the use of spin labeling and measurement of reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species. However, applications of electron spin resonance also extend into chemistry, biochemistry, physics, radiation dating, and commercial applications in petrochemical exploration and refining, oil condition monitoring, food sterilization and many other areas. Historically, electron spin resonance spectrometers have been very large, very expensive pieces of lab equipment that are therefore not readily accessible to many potential users. What is proposed is the development of a miniature, inexpensive, high sensitivity electron spin resonance spectrometer instrument that will make this powerful analytical technique accessible to a much broader range of users. ? ?
Free radicals are an important contributor to many disease processes. We propose to make a simple, low cost, portable analysis tool for the measurement of free radicals, particularly in clinical and biomedical research settings. ? ? ?
