EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. This is a competitive renewal of the Infectious Diseases training program within the Infectious Diseases Section, Department of Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine. During the previous funding period, the program was extremely successful in training Infectious Diseases fellows in both patient-based and laboratory-based research. The Investigative Medicine Program and the Microbial Pathogenesis Section, new initiatives at Yale since the last submission of this application, now provide additional unique opportunities for training. The Congress Avenue Building, the largest facility ever constructed at Yale University, will be completed in October, 2002 and wila house research laboratories and offices for the Infectious Diseases Section. Four recently hired Assistant Professors, and one additional recruitment which is underway, strengthen the research base within the Section. In the face of these accomplishments in fellowship training, new programmatic initiatives, new faculty, and of spectacular new research space, we propose to substantially expand the size and scope of our training program. We are highly confident that our program leadership, training faculty and training curriculum will insure success in broadening our training mission.
