EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. The.Medical Scientist Training Program {MSTP) at the University of California San.Francisco -- a combined M.D./Ph.D. program. The primary goal of our MSTP is to provide the means for a small cadre of gifted students to benefit from the superb training offered by both UCSF's medical school and its renowned graduate programs, in order to prepare them for careers as physician/investigators. Our guiding principles have been: first, to select students who meet the highest standards as both future physicians and future scientists; second, to offer dual M.D./Ph.D. training without compromising the quality of either degree; and third, to integrate the two degree pathways so that each student receives optimal training in the most efficient manner possible. The UCSF MSTP has been highly successful by any measure, and has grown to be a well-established and prized component of this University. This is in large part due to the dedicated efforts of the MSTP Council, a group of 14 distinguished faculty (most of them physician/scientists) representing all of the affiliated graduate programs, who interview and select applicants to the program, serve as advisors to our students, and work with the program director to guide program policy. We also enjoy the support of the Medical School administration, and act in synergy with the graduate programs working cooperatively with them to select and recruit outstanding students, who in turn enrich the laboratories and programs in which they choose to train. Our students are drawn from a highly competitive, nationwide pool; conduct their research with world-class faculty mentors, and have produced an enviable record of scientific publications.
