EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. This proposal requests support for an Institutional Research Service Award to support specialized pre- doctoral and postdoctoral training in demography, a companion to the existing training program in the demography and economics of aging. The training program in population and demography at the University of Chicago is formally administered by the Committee on Demographic Training (CDT), which coordinates training in population for pre-doctoral students as well as postdoctoral fellows with research interests in population and demography. At present, the CDT has 50 faculty members, from four departments within the University's Division of Social Sciences (Economics, Psychology, and Sociology) and Division of the Biological Sciences (Health Studies), and four of the University's professional schools (the Harris School of Public Policy Studies, the Pritzker School of Medicine, School of Social Service Administration, and the Graduate School of Business). The CDT members supervise over 70 pre-doctoral trainees and 12 postdoctoral fellows. The CDT is closely affiliated with the Population Research Center (PRC) and the Center on Aging (CoA). The PRC research associates are conducting research on 87 active grants, approximately 13 of which corresponds to projects related to child health and human development, nine being actually funded by NICHD with the balance supported by grants from foundations and other agencies. These projects provide essential opportunities for research experience and mentoring to our trainees. This proposal request funds for four pre-doctoral and two postdoctoral trainees for five years. A program of this size is justified by student demand for demographic training, by the pool of highly qualified students who apply to our fellowship, by the number of CDT training faculty available to trainees, and by the amount of ongoing research in which trainees can participate at the University of Chicago.
