EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. This proposal requests stipend, tuition, and other support for the Neurobiological and Behavioral Development Training Program (NBDTP) at the University of Virginia. The program involves faculty distributed widely throughout the University, including basic science and clinical departments of the Medical School as well as members of the Departments of Psychology and Biology of the College of Arts and Sciences. The faculty has a long history of close cooperation, interdepartmental team teaching and collaborative research. The purpose of the program is to provide multidisciplinary training in the allied fields of developmental neurobiology, developmental psychobiology and child development at both thepredoctoral (3) and postdoctoral (3) levels. Predoctoral trainees are usually enrolled in the Neuroscience Graduate Program. In addition to their required coursework, they will take electives in developmental biology and psychology. Developmental research will be earned out in one or more of the participatinglaboratories. Postdoctoral fellows will consist of Ph.D.'s and M.D.'s whose research specialties lie in areas allied to the participating faculty. Their training will be primarily hands-on research in one or more of the participating laboratories. In addition, all trainees attend the weekly Neuroscience Seminars, participate in the NBDTP seminar program, and attend the NBDTP journal/data club. They are given many opportunities to interact v/ith visiting scientists and to present their research at local and national meetings.
