The goal of the MARC U-STAR Program at the University of Puerto Rico-MayaguezCampus is to provide honor students at the Departments of Biology and Chemistry with research related activities and a special science curriculum that will improve their possibilities of being accepted and being successful in biomedical research graduate programs. In implementing the MARCU-STAR Program, we proposeto build uponthe activities of our well-established MARC HURT Program,which includes on- and off-campus research experiences for our MARC trainees, a special science curriculum, weekly meetings, and seminars. As an added feature of the MARC U-STAR Program, there will betwo student development activities directed towards freshmen and sophomores from the departments of Biology and Chemistry. Those are: 1) an orientation on 'Research Careers and Opportunities in BiomedicalSciences'and2) four summer on-campus workshops. Asanother added feature of the MARC Programat UPR-Mayaguez, seniorstudentswill nowbe required to take theORE Preparatory course and a workshop on Scientific Technical Writing. The objectives of the MARC U-STAR Program at UPR-Mayaguez are:1) to have 20% of freshmen and sophomore students peryear fromthe departments of Biology and Chemistry apply to the new On-Campus Summer Workshops, 2) to maintain the percentage of MARC trainees that participate in research experiences at 100%, 3)to increase by 10%the OREscore duringthis funding period, and 4) to increase by 5% the number of MARC trainees that enroll in Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D. programs during this funding period.
