EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. This is a revised competing renewal applicationfor the National Research Service Award (NRSA) Short-Term Training Grant. From 1980-1999, the University of Michigan Medical School has used the NRSA to provide a mentored summer research experience for 520 medical students. Many of these research trainees have gone on to successful careers as physician scientists. The revised application describes a plan to train 32 medical students each summer, with the following objectives: 1.) to give students the opportunity to learn research concepts and methodology from experienced investigators, and assess whether they wish to pursue careers in research; 2.) to increase the number of medical students who choose research careers; 3.) to provide advanced research opportunities for those students who are already on a path to become physician scientists; 4.) to provide trainees who elect not to go into academic medicine an understanding of the scientific method, and critical analysis of literature; 5.) to increase the number of under- represented minority medical students and undergraduate students who participate in a research experience, and ultimately choose careers as physician scientists; 6.) to promote research experiences that can develop into ongoing student-faculty mentoring relationships; 7.) to provide trainees with experience in scientific presentation and publication of research through the Annual Student Biomedical Research Forum and other local or national scientific meetings; 8.) to provide students with a high quality didactic program in research with an emphasis on the ethical and responsible conduct of research. The new co-principal investigators will work through the Office of Student Biomedical Research Programs to provide research counseling for interested students, match medical students with experienced faculty mentors, run the didactic portion of the program, and evaluate and monitor the program through tracking of trainees. The co-principal investigators will draw on the extensive basic science and clinical research resources at the University of Michigan Medical School and the University of Michigan Health Systems. Medical student interest in research, and faculty mentor involvement at this institution is at an all time high. This application describes how the NRSA will continue to be the foundation for the successful medical student research programs at the University of Michigan Medical School.
