The overall goal of Core C-Molecular Biology is to provide research, training and collaborative support for Projects 1, 2, and 3 of the ICIDR African Malaria Vectors. Core C currently exists as the ICIPE Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MBB). The Head of the Department, Dr. Ellie O. Osir, will also serve as the Core Leader. Core C has 3 specific aims: 1) to provide molecular biology research support for the 3 ICIDR projects: Larval Ecology, Behavior, and Vector Competence, 2) to provide training support for ICIDR team members and visiting national and international collaborators, and 3) to provide linkages with an international network of insect molecular biologists and to assist with publication of papers and presentations of research results. Some of the technical inputs that Core C will provide include PCR identification of Anopheles gambiae complex, the use of random amplified polymorphic DNA-PCR and microsatellite markers for studying the population genetics of Anopheles gambiae complex, QTL mapping if malaria-refractory genes in mosquitoes. Core C resources will be divided according to: 40% Project 1- Larval Ecology, 20% Project 2- Behavior, and 40% Project 3-Vector Competence. The Core Leader and staff of the MBB Department have extensive international linkages to well-recognized insect molecular biologists and physiologists. Many of these notable insect biologists are already helping ICIPE/MBB with other programs at the Nairobi laboratories. This ICIDR project will benefit from these professional contacts and we anticipate that this will have a major impact on the quality of the science.
