Dr. Mark Hammergren and Dr. Susan Wagner, at the Adler Planetarium, will coordinate the Adler Public Education Fellowships. The core of this program is the AstroScience Workshop (ASW), in which a Fellow, selected from a competitive pool of astronomy graduate students, plans, develops, manages and teaches a 5-week summer program for high school students with the support of the Adler astronomy and education departments. Each Fellow spends the academic year developing content for the Workshop, inviting speakers and organizing the program while continuing a vigorous program of research at their home institution. Upon completion of the Workshop, the student will disseminate the results of the effort in order to convey the lessons learned from the program. The goal of the program, and its principle broader impact, is the training of scientist-educators with familiarity and skill in communicating their research results and methodology to the general public. In the process, the excitement of science will be conveyed to high school students in the greater Chicago area.
