This research will study the fate and transport of nitrogen in and through urban/suburban environments using a combination of field observations, biogeochemical studies, and modeling. The proposed research will address problems resulting from urbanization-induced hydrologic changes that affect the ability of riparian areas to retain and process nitrogen. The scientific outcomes of the study should be of use to city planners and engineers concerned with the reduction of nitrogen fluxes to surface waters. The researchers have established working relationships with municipalities and planning boards, which will facilitate transfer of knowledge gained from this research.
