This proposal requests for partial travel support for 10 participating U.S. scientists to attend the sixth international workshop and conference on thermal, fluid and interfacial phenomena in physico-chemical, materials and bio- processes at the Technion campus in Haifa, Israel on June 18-21, 2012. Participation in this conference is vital to the U.S. since scientists from around the world will meet to exchange ideas and seek potential collaborations for future work. This exchange of ideas will very likely develop new ideas to tackle current research problems. Research problems in materials processing, nanotechnologies and drug delivery as well as space technologies will be addressed. The themes of this conference are two-fold:

1) industrial and practical applications (e.g., energy problems of heat pipes and evaporation, two phase flows, materials processing of thin films, and in micro-fluidics, fluid transport in novel processing involving interfaces and measurement of thermo-physical properties.

2) fundamental transport phenomena (e.g., interfacial instabilities in liquid bridges, Marangoni phenomena, two fluid problems, interfacial mass exchange and more.

The participating scientists will represent research areas funded by NSF through the Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems (CBET). The scientists will represent academia, industry and government research.

Broader Impacts:

The wide range of participants will be expected to benefit the cooperative science programs between the U.S. and other countries as well as university/industrial collaborations. The proceedings of the conference will also be published by a well-known journal, the European Journal of Physics. The research ideas will be widely disseminated via libraries and the electronic media making a broad impact on the community of scientists and engineers. The published research ideas and discussions will encourage future novel research and fresh perspectives on technological problems.

Project Report

Funding was sought to support the travel of US scientists and researchers to present papers at the sixth international workshop and conference on interfacial fluid mechanics and transport processes. The conference was organized by the Technion Israel and held on their campus in Haifa, Israel between June 18-22 2012. These scientists represented a broad base of research funded by NSF, through its CBET division. Assistance from NSF was acknowledged on the conference website and at the conference itself besides publications that are also expected. The subject and timeliness of the conference themes Benefit to the scientific community Conferences in the general area of interfacial phenomena in physico-chemical processes are expected to be organized every two years. This time around the conference themes were essentially three- fold. The first theme was on industrial and practical applications such as in energy problems of heat pipes and evaporation, two phase flows, emphasizing materials processing of thin films, and in bio transport and in micro-fluidics. Other problems involved fluid transport in novel processing involving interfaces and measurement of thermo-physical properties. A second theme was in fundamental transport phenomena such as interfacial instabilities in liquid bridges, Marangoni phenomena, two fluid problems, interfacial mass exchange and more. The third theme was novel flows using vibrational, electrical and magnetic forces. Intellectual Merit of the Activity: The intellectual merit of the proposed activity was in the fact that scientists from various countries were able to discuss their research and foster collaboration for future work. Because the workshop involved discussions and responses to papers, new ideas were generated in areas of materials science and nanotechnology. The scientists represented academia, industry and government research and this collaboration therefore benefited the cooperative science programs between the US and other countries as well as university industry collaboration. Broader Impact of the Activity: The proceedings of the conference were published in a well-known journal, the European Journal of Physics (vol 219, Issue 1, (2013)). This publisher like others also have an electronic publishing format aside of a paper format. Thus the research ideas have been widely disseminated via libraries and the electronic media making a broad impact on the community of scientists and engineers. The published research ideas and discussions will encourage future novel research and fresh perspectives on problems of technological content
