The International Symposium on Performance Analysis of Systems and Software (ISPASS) is a premier forum for sharing advanced academic and industrial research focused on performance analysis of computer systems and software, and brings together researchers from the computer architecture, systems and applications software, and performance analysis fields. ISPASS seeks to increase student participation in symposium and the field. The proposed funding supports the travel of eligible US students to the symposium. The education and training of students is an important broader impact of NSF funding.

Project Report

The 2012 International Symposium on Performance Analysis and of Systems and Software was held from April 1-3, 2012 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. This grant provided $5,000 of travel support for students to attend the conference and present their work. Student travel applications were solicited via the conference website and the email lists of professional organizations. A total of 19 applications were received, of which 15 were from US universities and thus eligible for NSF funding. All of the eligible applicants were awarded funding. The specific amounts of funding varied, with priority being given to applicants who were presenting papers or posters; applicants who were US citizens; and applicants who were members of groups underrepresented in computing (including women). The applicants represented universities in 13 different states: California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Virginia. The ISPASS research field is of great significance to future computer system designs; as the quest for increased performance becomes more challenging, researchers must understand the performance implications of future systems and applications. Travel support for this conference increased participation in the field of performance and power analysis of software and systems and made it possible for students to present their research to the community. By funding 5 students who are members of underrepresented groups, the award also helped to broaden participation in this field.
