The purpose of this travel grant is to increase participation at the 2013 International Workshop on Software Engineering for Computational Science and Engineering Workshop, taking place in Conjunction with the International Conference on Software Engineering 2013. The grant will increase the amount and diversity of participation from the Software Engineering and Computational Science/Engineering communities, help nurture interactions, synergies and collaborations involving the two communities, and help build the next generation of knowledgeable researchers and practitioners working on software development to sustain and advance software for computational science and engineering. The funds will support faculty and students, with attention to underrepresented groups.

Project Report

. The goal of this workshop is to facilitate interactions and discussions between members of two communities that historically have had low levels of interaction, namely the Software Engineering community and the Computational Science & Engineering community. The travel grant enables a broader group of participants by funding workshop attendees with varied background (i.e. those from Software Engineering and those from Computational Science & Engineering). In addition, the majority of the participants were graduate students or undergraduate students. These participants, all of whom had not attended this workshop previously, had the opportunity to meet and interact with more senior researchers from these domains. The results of the post-workshop survey indicated that the vast majority of the participants found the workshop beneficial. The particularly enjoyed the opportunity to interact with researchers from various backgrounds. The survey respondents also indicated there was a high likelihood of new collaborations resulting from the interactions during the workshop. Finally, most survey respondents indicated their interest in participating in future workshops. The results of the workshop, including extensions of the best papers and summaries of breakout discussions will be published in the May/June 2014 issue of Computing in Science & Engineering. Some of the papers were authored or co-authored by travel grant awardees. The awardees also contributed to the breakout discussions.
