In this project, funded by the Experimental Physical Chemistry Program of the Chemistry Division, Prof. Thomas D. Varberg of Macalester College and his undergraduate research students will investigate the visible and far infrared (THz) spectroscopy of a series of transition-metal containing free-radical molecules. The ultimate goal of these studies is to probe the fine and hyperfine structure of the spectra of these high-spin species. The results of these studies will provide details of the electronic structure of these difficult-to-study molecules. In addition, the frequencies will be of use in identifying the presence of these molecules in astronomical objects.

Besides the potential broader scientific impact of the proposed research, Prof. Varberg will continue to provide his undergraduate research students with valuable research experience, which will help them to pursue careers in science and technology.
