This proposal was received in response to Nanoscale Science and Engineering Education initiative, NSF 05-543, category NUE. Through this award, funded by the Chemistry Division, Prof. Brian H. Augustine and his collaborators at James Madison University will develop a vertically integrated nanoscience curriculum in chemistry, targeting a broad range of students, including science and non-science majors, as well as pre-service middle- and high-school teachers.
Some broader impacts of the proposed work come from the efforts that this NUE team will make through dissemination of curricular materials through journal publication, conference presentation, and posting of material on the internet, including the National Digital Science Library. In addition, the NUE team will be working with a private-sector partner to develop commercial micro- and nanofabricated devices and modules for use by other colleges or high schools to demonstrate micro/nanotechnology topics.
