The Analytical and Surface Chemistry (ASC) program of the Division of Chemistry will support the GOALI research program of Prof. Hai-Lung Dai of Temple University and An-Gong Yeh of the DuPont Marshall Laboratory. The academic-industrial collaborative research team will develop nonlinear optical probes that are capable of monitoring the adsorption kinetics, energy, density, identity, and structure of molecules adsorbed on the surface of nanometer and micron size particles in a colloid. The resulting microscopic knowledge of the colloidal particle surface will enable understanding of particle-solvent and particle-particle interactions in a colloid. The knowledge acquired will directly impact technologies such as coating materials and solar cells. The study will provide excellent training opportunities to undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in a cutting edge interdisciplinary research field, which is of great importance to the US economy.
