The Analytical and Surface Chemistry Program of the National Science Foundation will support the research program of Janice Reutt-Robey at the University of Maryland, College Park. The goals of this project are to (1) Develop methods for the preparation of molecular films with varied chemical textures and (2) Determine the influence of chemical texture on electronic properties. To realize these goals, samples with varied chemical textures will be prepared via multi-component deposition and mapped with scanning tunneling microscopy. Correlated electronic information will be obtained through electron tunneling and photoemission measurements. New knowledge from this program will guide technology toward the development of efficient organic materials for such applications as solar energy conversion, display devices and electronic transistors. This program will contribute to the United States workforce by providing training opportunities in surface analytical chemistry and by increasing the scientific literacy of K-12 students through educational outreach.
