The 2013 IEEE INFOCOM Conference on Computer Communications will be held in Turin, Italy, April 14-19, 2013. This preeminent technical conference is the primary venue for presenting new research results in the area of computer communications, and is widely attended by researchers and practitioners in the field. Attending conferences such as INFOCOM is of paramount importance for the development of graduate students. Participants have the opportunity to present their work, attend panel and keynote sessions, and interact with hundreds of others performing leading-edge research in the field. This proposal requests funding to support approximately 20 graduate students in the United States to attend this premiere conference. The travel award will target graduate students, in particular, women and under-represented minority students, since attending conferences is an important part of their educational experience, and they often have limited travel funds.

Project Report

This project seeks to support graduate students in the US to attend IEEE Infocom 2013 in Turin, Italy from April 14 to April 19, 2013. IEEE Infocom is the primary venue for presenting research results in the area of computer communications, and is widely attended by researchers and practitioners in the field. Our objective is to support as many students as possible for them to attend the conference. We examined the paper quality (main conference paper, mini-conference paper, workshop/poster paper) and give priority to students from minority groups. Significant Results: This project supplied funds for 32 students to attend Infocom. Attending such high-caliber technical venues was extremely valuable for future researchers. Not only were they exposed to the state-of-the-art in the field, but they also had the opportunity to interact with peers from institutions worldwide, meet with leading researchers, and take part in discussions that are likely to shape the future of the field (e.g., in terms of technology, standards, etc). This support is extremely critical to many students who were faced financial challenges to attend the conference. The students who received this support are very thankful for the generous support from NSF. Many of them are first time conference attendees. Among the applicants, half of them were selected to receive this support. Twelve of the 32 awardees are female students.
