A grant has been awarded the American Museum of Natural History under the direction of Dr. Angela Klaus to acquire a variable p pressure scanning electron microscope (SEM) for use in studying natural history specimens. The variable pressure feature of the microscope ensures that irreplaceable specimens of bones, teeth, and other biological items can be viewed with minimal preparation that would otherwise be destructive for these items. The instrument will also allow imaging of large specimens. The museum will use the SEM to prepare images for publications on systematics, evolution, and conservation of biological diversity. Many students and educators who participate in museum research programs will use the instrument. The images will also be used in exhibit and outreach programs that will enhance the museum experience and educational programs for the general public.
