An award has been made to Western Washington University under the direction of Dr. David S. Leaf for the acquisition of an instrument system for research and education requiring measurement of quantitative chemiluminescence. Several pieces of equipment will be acquired, including several microscopes and plate readers for detection of proteins and other biochemically important compounds. The new instruments will enhance research employing luminescence to study cellular structure, growth and development of marine animals, classification of bacteria from deep sea vents, and plant structure and function. The instruments will be used in courses for undergraduates and for student research. The instrument will be used in a marine science course aimed at minority students.
