This proposal is a request for partial support of a symposium on speciation in the marine environment to be held at the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biologists (SICB) in Salt Lake City Utah on January 3rd -7th 2011. Speakers from the fields of evolutionary biology, ecology, population genetics, phylogenetics, and paleontology will come together to discuss their latest research and its implications for understanding the process of speciation in the marine environment.

A symposium on speciation in the marine environment and the published volume that proceed from this symposium will contribute to our understanding of a fundamental biological process, with implications for conservation and biodiversity discovery.

Project Report

Maria Pia Miglietta, University of Notre Dame Francesco Santini, University of California, Los Angeles Anuschka Faucci, University of Hawaii, Manoa Awardee: University of Notre Dame Award Number: 1057786 This award supported travel and meeting expenses of speakers invited to the Symposium "Speciation in the Sea", held during the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah in January 2011. The symposium was extremely successful as testified by outstanding speakers, great attendance, and high quality publications that it produced. The symposium brought together experts of different marine taxonomic groups, including fish, various invertebrates such as corals, mollusks and echinoderms, protists, and algae, and of different disciplines, all united by the common interest in speciation. We invited population geneticists, systematists, paleontologists, and ecologists who addressed the challenge of investigating marine speciation from different angles (see below list of speakers). The symposium was followed by an animated roundtable discussion on speciation. Both the symposium and roundtable fostered new collaborations among the speakers. Finally, the symposium resulted in a special issue of the journal Integrative and Comparative Biology that was published in September 2011 (Volume 51 Issue 3 September 2011).
