The University of Florida operates a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site affiliated with its Physics Department. Fifteen undergraduate students, with backgrounds in physics or a related field, are recruited nationwide each year for a ten-week summer research experience. The REU Site actively encourages the participation of women, members of underrepresented groups, and students from predominantly undergraduate institutions. Each student carries out an individual research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Projects span experimental, theoretical, and computational research in a wide variety of materials-related topics. The summer program also includes research seminars and laboratory tours, professional development workshops, visits to nearby scientific facilities, and organized social events. Students write a final research report and present their results at an REU research symposium. Presentations at national research conferences are supported.
