This proposal is to support participation of mathematicians based in the United States to the quarter program "Random Walks and the Asymptotic Geometry of Groups" to be held at Institut Henri Poincare (IHP) in Paris, France, from January 3rd to April 6th, 2014. This program is concerned with the theory of random walks on groups and its relations and interactions with combinatorial and geometric group theory. The aim of the program is to provide an introduction to this area of research and its most recent developments, to review and disseminate recent progress and to stimulate the emergence of new ideas and directions of research. Some of the activities are aimed specifically at researchers at the beginning of their career and at people who have no prior specific knowledge of this area of research. Other activities are aimed at specialists. Most of the activities will focus on recent developments and new directions of research. The program's website is available at www.ihp.fr/en/ceb/geowalks.
This project supported US participants to the Institut Henri Poincare trimesterprogram: RANDOM WALKS AND ASYMPTOTIC GEOMETRY OF GROUPS which was held in Paris (and in Luminy, Marseille), France, from January 3 to April 6 2014. The program was organized by INDIRA CHATTERJI, ANNA ERSCHLER, VADIM KAIMANOVICH and LAURENT SALOFF-COSTE. It consisted in a two week WINTER SCHOOL in LUMINY, 3 research workshops in PARIS and seminars, courses and invited lectures at thet Indsitut Henri Poincare. The Winter School attracted 70 participants who were introduced to the areas covered by the strimester and to some of the essential techniques used in these areas of research. The lecturers were chosen for the quality of their exposition skills among people who have made significant original contributions to these areas of research. The workshop titles give a glimpse of the areas that were covered: January 27-31. Random Walks on Groups February 24-28. Groups Acting on Rooted Trees March 24-28. Asymptotic Properties of Groups Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Between the weeks occupied by these workshops, participants attended courses and invited lectures by renowned experts. Weekly seminars were organized including a student seminars. The following mathematicians presented series of lectures: Steve Lalley, Emmanuel Breuillard, Jean-Francois Quint, Volodymyr Nekrashevych, Yves Benoist, Nikolai Vavilov and Paul Schupp. The trimester attracted over 400 participants. The project partially supported 8 US based advanced researchers, 2 US based postdocs and 11 US based students. Supported participants included 8 women and students from all over the United States. Many US based participants were supported by other means including their individual research Grant.
