This project will provide funds for the purchase of a multi-anvil high pressure apparatus to be used primarily for studies in the 3 to 27 GPa range on atomic diffusion in crystalline and liquid silicates, oxides and metals. Acquisition of a multi-anvil device will allow my group to acquire diffusion data for a wide range of high-pressure phases relevant to Earth's deep interior. The experimental data will contribute to the understanding of chemical mass transfer, creep and anelastic deformation in Earth's mantle and core. Experiments performed with this new equipment will provide information that crosses disciplinary boundaries between geochemistry and geophysics. The equipment is vital to building the high-pressure research program of the PI, and will allow the integration of research and education of graduate and undergraduate students at Case Western Reserve University.
