This workshop has been organized to bring together representatives from universities, electric utilities, industry, the military and government to address national needs in power electronics education and research. The objectives of the workshop will include: assessment of national manpower needs in power electronics through the year 2000 and beyond; review of the present status of power electronics education and research in the U.S. and abroad; review of university/industry/government relations in the U.S. and abroad with respect to research support, patent issues, publication issues, technology transfer and commercialization, job opportunities in power electronics; review university needs in establishing power electronic programs; and review of the mechanisms by which utilities, industry, government and the military can work with universities to meet national needs in power electronics education and research.
