The Fort Valley State University (FVSU) HBCU-UP Targeted Infusion Project will incorporate plant genomics into the undergraduate curriculum of the Plant Science, and Biology departments. Genomics is a rapidly advancing interdisciplinary science. This project will implement new inquiry-based investigations to allow students to further understand scientific method. To accomplish this objective a Plant Genomics senior level course will be developed and newly designed genomics modules will be incorporated into several existing courses such as: Genetic Engineering, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Breeding, Techniques in Molecular Biology, Botany, Microbiology, Research Methods, and Special Projects. The acquisition of a sequencer will provide students hands on experience with genomics research and facilitate on-going research efforts of faculty and students at FVSU. Students enrolled in these courses will be better prepared for various careers in the biological sciences, particularly in the burgeoning fields of genomics and bioinformatics. The teaching materials developed at FVSU will be disseminated through a course website, conference presentations, and workshops for juniors and faculty members. The project will provide new educational tools for universities and colleges nationwide in order to help them meet the need for individuals knowledgeable in genomics.

Project Report

A senior level course was developed to integrate advanced concepts in plant genomics and bioinformatics into biological science curriculum. On average 20-30 STEM major students enrolled in the course each year for the duration of the project. Students were exposed to hands-on learning modules, database searches and experiential training and thereby strengthening their foundation in this emerging field. A large number of these students were selected to participate in NSF funded collaborative summer research internships programs with major research institutions as well as federal labs. Several of these students continued their independent research project in the academic year under the faculty mentors. Upon graduation from FVSU, a significant number of program participants are currently enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D programs across the nation and more than 10 studenst are working at the federal gencies. Faculty as well as students attended and made award winning scientific presentations or posters at national, international scientific and professional meetings. A faculty member received advanced training in genomics/bioinformatics at a world renowned laboratory at University of Georgia. News on program activities was also disemminated via popular media articles as well as in scientific journal. Visiting scientist/ professional expert interacted with students and faculty during the duration of the project.
