Wayne State University will attract and retain gifted minority undergraduate students who show an interest in pursuing a career in science. This will be accomplished by: 1. Student recruitment as well as the utilization of programs which already exist in the area for identifying gifted high school minority students with interests in science; 2. Providing a signficant academic enrichment program to participants; 3. Implementation of a detailed plan to provide each participant with an introduction to various scientific areas and research experience; 4. A system of mentoring by research professors who are responsible for academic and personal attention to student progress; 5. Involvement of each student in a research lab alongside graduate students in specific research projects and participation in research seminars; 6. Interaction and involvement with parents of participating students; 7. Arranging for participant support available from programs for minority students which already exist at Wayne State University; 8. Providing tuition waivers and stipends for students to ensure an opportunity for all qualified applicants to participate; and 9. Providing housing stipends for students from outside the local area to ensure an opportunity for non-resident qualified applicants to participate.
