Coordinators are Dr. William J. Schull of the University of Texas, Health Science Center, and Dr. Francisco Rothhammer, of the University of Chile, Santiago. This conference has two broad aims: to analyze the evolution of patterns of morbidity from Pre Columbian times to the present in Aymara speaking Indian populations, and to identify future collaborative anthropological, biochemical and health studies that will contribute to deeper insights into these patterns. Genetic pathologies in prehistoric populations will be compared with findings in living Indian population. Scientific characterization of the differences between Andean and non Andean peoples began over a century ago, but most of the research for understanding the genetic basis of human adaptation to high altitude environments has focused on the living population. Little effort has been made to examine the pattern of change over time. Using new investigative techniques on the available collection of skeletal remains of Andean populations dating back 8,000 years, new information will be derived to elucidate the evolution of indigenous 1peoples. This conference will bring together investigators from a variety of disciplines and points of view to develop a pro gram of integrated research for this purpose. ***
