Proposal Number: 0714832 Institution: Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution PI: T. Askew

The proposal as submitted requested six Shipboard Scientific Support items for the R/Vs Seward Johnson, all of which are safety items. Safety equipment benefits all users of the ship. Harbor Branch will do group purchases of six items and distribute the items to the institutions operating academic research vessels. Doing a group purchase of safety items provides standardization of equipment from one ship to another and thus increases user familiarity with life saving equipment. The HBOI requested equipment would support scientific operations and data collection in the Atlantic Ocean. The number of missions supported by the R/V Seward Johnson averages around ten per year. The Seward Johnson is integral to the Institutions public outreach program and supports several educational and public outreach events during the year through the use of vessels open-house, student training at sea, and web-based projects.
