Fisichella This award to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts provides shared-use instrumentation to significantly improve the oceanographic research capabilities of the research vessels Atlantis, Knorr and Oceanus, three ships operated by WHOI as part of the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) research fleet. Specifically, this award will provide a Ku-band satellite communication system offering 7x24 Internet access to scientists and crew of R/V Oceanus from sea, as well as batteries and upgrades to existing lowered acoustic current profilers, load pins to document forces on the bottom of the cable during CTD operations, a new salinometer and oxygen titration system for use in the seagoing hydrographic van, spare motor and head for submersible pumps for deep-water sampling, acotusic releases, and a new attitude/heading sensor system for R/V Oceanus. These improvements will be of substantial benefit to marine scientists using these three in their research during 2007 and future years.
