Scripps Inst. of Oceanography P.I = R.Knox 6 Aug 07 The proposal, as submitted, requests four Shipboard Scientific Support items for the Academic Research Vessels operated by SIO. Following the review of the proposal an emergency with the wire train on the REVELLE deepsea winch ocurred. Funding for a corrective engineerinng study for the wire train problem has been included in the revised request. One of the four safety items originally requested is required by US Coast Guard and the International Maritime Organization. All of the requests have an element of safety in them. Safety items benefit all users of the ship. Scripps will receive the requested major safety equipment through group purchases being done by Haarbor Branch Inst. of Ocean. and Woods Hole Oceanographic Inst. Scripps supports several educational and public outreach events during the year through use of ship operations, providing an open-house for the local community and student training during cruises. Periodically the University holds open house on the ships and provides tours for students.
