This award is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Public Law 111-5).

This award provides funds for infrastructure enhancements for the National Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF). Resources provided within NDSF include the Human Occupied Vehicle (HOV) Alvin, the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Jason and the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) Sentry. These assets are available for use with funded science programs utilizing the engineering and operational personnel of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution?s Deep Submergence Group.

The request includes funding to complete the upgrade of Alvin and Jason imaging systems to hi-definition format as well as procurement of a Reson 7125 multibeam sonar mapping system for Jason an EdgeTch sub-bottom profiler for use with any NDSF platform and an ultra-short baseline (USBL) tracking system to accurately locate any underwater vehicle.
