Abstract for PHY-0510020 PI: Colin Morginstar Institution: Carnegie Mellon The hadron spectrum using lattice QCD simulations with extended interpolating operators?

The objective of this proposal is to calculate the mass spectrum of light- and heavy-quark conventional and hybrid mesons and baryons, such as the NO excitations, doubly-charmed baryons, and pentaquark states using Monte Carlo methods with large sets of well-designed operators. Such calculations are certainly challenging: determinations of large correlation matrices will be required, the identification of the spin of the hadrons must be carefully done by matching patterns of degeneracies across different irreducible representations of the symmetry group of the lattice, the inclusion of quark loops in the Monte Carlo updating is crucial, careful studies of finite-volume and discretization effects will be needed, and the incorporation of multihadron operators will be important for extracting the higher-lying resonances. However, the use of powerful variational techniques and the availability of unprecedented computing hardware and software through the DOE's Scientific Discoveries through Advanced Computing initiative, makes such calculations possible for the first time. These studies are important for extending our understanding of the most fundamental basis of our physical world and of the origins of our Universe. Algorithmic ideas are likely to have applications in other computational fields. This activity will promote the development of young scientists trained in computational skills. Outreach will be accomplished through articles in popular publications and by posting results with simplified background information on publicly accessible web pages.
