This experimental research program is a continuation of an ongoing search for a non-zero electron electric dipole moment (EDM), using the metastable a(1)[triplet sigma plus] state of lead oxide. The a(1) state will be excited with a direct laser-induced transition from the ground state, and the linear Stark shift associated with the EDM will be measured using quantum beats in fluorescence from a high-density vapor cell of the molecule. Observation of a non-zero electron EDM would provide definitive evidence for phenomena beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Currently favored theories involving supersymmetry typically predict an electron EDM within a few orders of magnitude of the current limit, which was set by this experiment. In parallel with the EDM search, techniques for further extending the sensitivity of the method will be developed. The broader impact of the program is extensive student training as well as collaborations with small college faculty.
