Future investigations of the Arctic Ocean will certainly include gliders and autonomous underwater vehicles, for which navigation and communication are obviously key issues. It is both timely and necessary that a workshop be held to address fundamental issues of how acoustics can be employed in navigation and communication. In this workshop, the current state of the art in low frequency acoustics will be reviewed, and applied to the design of a multi-tiered navigation and telemetry system for ice covered environments.
