This award will provide support of travel and registration costs for participants to attend the Sixth Gordon Research Conference on Polar Marine Science. The conference, scheduled for 20-25 March 2007, is titled An Interdisciplinary Look at Processes Over Multiple Scales of Variability. Participants will explore the physical, chemical, and biological processes that dominate temporal and spatial scales ranging from the microscale to the global scale and from seconds to eons. This new format is exciting because it allows us look at each scale from a variety of different vantage points and to better understand how the fundamental physical, biological, and chemical processes of that scale interact to produce the phenomena we measure.

Broader Impacts

Gordon Research Conferences are unusual in that attendees are expected to attend all sessions and to actively participate in the discussions.. The conference also includes a bilateral treatment of the northern and southern high latitude oceans. A bipolar focus may to new insights into global scale processes. Given the anticipated number of participants, the requested level of funding would allow the organizers to provide support for more than 25% of the expenses for qualified participants who would otherwise be unable to attend, including young scientists, graduate students, and scientists from developing countries.
