The Alaska Native Science Comiinission will hold a workshop on the topic of Social Trinsition in the North as part of-thc 1999 American Association for the Advancement of Science Arctic Science Conference. The discussion subjects will include suicide, household and family Structures, substance abuse, traditional healing, resiliency, nutrition, aging, child development, trends in mortality, and attitudes toward child birth. The objectives of the workshop are to examine existing data for orientation of scientific and educational researchers to the archive of information and to present case studies to illustrate the breadth of data available. ]'he results of the workshop will provide an opportunity for researchers and educators to discuss topics important to Arctic residents at a time when social transitions are rapidly occurring and have significant impacts that are Linder study in the research community.
