18. GOALS FOR FELLOWSHIP TRAINING AND CAREER For my fellowship training, I sought out a Medical/Clinical Psychology program that places an emphasis on research training because I am interested in a research career. My personal experience with having a disability, as well as my undergraduate research experience, has stimulated an interest for me in disability research. I have general research interests in SCI and pain that I would like to explore, but I am also open to exploring other opportunities and develop my own line of investigation. A long-term goal for me is to have an academic career with teaching and research in a medical setting. I hope my fellowship training will prepare me with skills and experience in research to accomplish these goals. NAME AND DEGREE(S) J. Scott Richards, Ph.D. 20. POSITION/RANK Director of Research, Dept. Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation; Full Tenured Professor 21. RESEARCH INTERESTS/AREAS Coping with spinal cord injury; classification, mechanisms and treatment of pain following spinal cord injury. RESEARCH PROPOSAL' 22. DESCRIPTION (Do not exceed space provided) No thesis selected: Entering doctoral program Fall term, 2000 Two areas of research that interest me most are spinal cord injury (SCI) and chronic pain research. Many research opportunities exist within these two areas. Medical advances have prolonged the lives and contributed to the overall health persons with SCI. Chronic pain has emerged as a challenge for clinicians in the treatment of SCI persons. Future research in this area may help answer many questions to improve the lives of persons with SCI. This area of research is an interest of my advisor as well as myself. However, I intend to hone in on a more specific thesis topic within my first year of graduate school.
