The prevalence of asthma in certain Hispanic subgroups in the U.S. and Latin America is among the highestin the world. The goals of this research proposal are to train the applicant in the genetic epidemiology ofcomplex respiratory diseases and to test for association between variants in positional candidate genes andasthma and its related phenotypes in an isolated Hispanic population in the Central Valley of Costa Rica.First, as a specific aim, this grant will train the applicant in the genetic epidemiology of a complex pulmonarydisease through the attainment of a master'sdegree in public health and formal research training. Second,as a specific aim, the applicant will genotype single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in five candidategenes in a genomic region linked to asthma and/or its related phenotypes in families of children with asthmain Costa Rica. Finally, as a specific aim, the applicant will perform a family-based analysis of associationbetween SNPs and haplotypes in selected candidate genes and asthma and its related phenotypes.
